I had someone recently ask me what my bible study or devotional habits were. They were curious what I did, how often, was I consistent, etc, etc.
So, before I share, I’m honestly curious what your habits are.
I feel this is a discipline/habit that is often put in a box of one size fits all…that approach seems to cause a lot of frustration.
So, what does it look like for you? Some ideas could include
- Do you read your Bible?
- consistently?
- What do you do?
- Has this been a difficult habit to maintain and nurture?
- Whatever you want to share, but I am honestly interested in your response.

I read http://www.utmost.org almost every day and at the end of the short blurb are links to bible reading. I used to follow those but recently I have started skipping to a reading plan in my NIV Family Bible Reader app. I do all of this on my iPhone generally while waiting for someone’s bath water to run so I can get in the shower or at breakfast.
I used to read My Utmost for his Highest from a book but the online version involves less page flipping so I’m happier.
Thanks Chet. I’m going to check out that app, I havent seen it before. And as for Mr. Chambers, I agree I think he’s brilliant.
i’ve never been great at consistently reading my bible. i do a lot better when i am committed to a specific study book, whether on my own or as part of a group. so, i would say for most of my life, no. but for the past few years, i am reading in my bible almost daily. and i have just recently started to read a chapter or two at night. i heard from a few people that it’s helpful during personal reading to read from a different translation, so that the words are fresh and unknown to you. so, i try to read from the message before bed.
I did switch to the English Standard Version a couple years ago and a now its the one I always use. Beth Moore for the win.
Yes. Every day without fail. Bill and I (together and out loud) have read through the Bible every year for many many years using various reading plans. For the last few years we’ve subscribed to Our Daily Bread and follow their outline. We also read the little sermonettes provided. We also read Eugene Peterson’s Praying with the Psalms, that is a daily reading of the Psalms.
We’ve found over the years that reading like this together promotes great discussions because we always find something new in how it relates to our lives at the moment.
Bill also does other readings and studies over the course of the day.
Maria, I love it! I haven’t read Eugenes Praying with the Psalms, will have to check that out. I have loved Ben Patterson’s book “God’s Prayer Book: The Power and Pleasure of Praying the Psalms.”
I do, but not every day. About 4-5 times a week. I used to just use a study book as a starter or use my bible study homework as a starting off point, though there is now some ‘required’/suggested reading from our pastor before Sunday church each week, so that makes it easy. I have been inconsistently consistent about this over the years, but am back on track for the past 1.5 years now.
What a good pastor you have there to provide reading plans.
